Evernote: How to uncheck a checklist of tasks or to do items.

One of the great features in Evernote is the ability to have checklists. Once you create and use a checklist, all the items on the list will have checkmarks. To create a new list of items without checkmarks, do this:

  1. Copy the original list.
  2. Paste it into a new note.
  3. Select the entire list, then click on the ‘checklist’ icon option at the top next to bullet and numbered list icons.
  4. This will remove all the checkboxes.
  5. Click on the ‘checklist’ icon option at the top and the blank checkboxes will appear.

Now, enjoy checking off items from your list!

AT&T Offers Security Advice Regarding Equifax Data Breach

[Source: The following announcement from AT&T was sent to customers via email on 28 Sep 2017. Links to agencies and sites were created and confirmed when reposting here.]

On September 7, 2017, Equifax announced that it suffered a data breach. There was no breach of AT&T systems or the data we maintain, but we have been working with Equifax to learn more about this event and understand there is a possibility that your personal information might have been exposed.

We encourage you to take the following steps to help protect your identity:

  1. Visit EquifaxSecurity2017.com/consumer-notice to determine if you are potentially affected and to sign up for credit file monitoring and identity theft protection.
  2. Contact major credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert and/or credit freeze on your credit report, and to learn about identity theft programs offered by the Federal Trade Commission. Details on how to contact the credit reporting agencies and FTC can also be found at Consumer.ftc.gov

If you believe you were the victim of identity theft, here are some steps you can consider for additional protection:

  1. Close the accounts that you believe may have been tampered with or opened fraudulently. Use the Identity Theft Report, which can be found at Identitytheft.gov
  2. File a police report and get a copy to submit to your creditors and others who may require proof of the crime.
  3. File your complaint with the FTC (the Federal Trade Commission). The FTC maintains an identity theft database that law enforcement agencies use for investigations. Filing a complaint also helps the FTC better assist you, as the commission learns more about identity theft and the problems it creates.

Your privacy and data security are paramount to us. If you have any questions about this issue we strongly encourage you to visit EquifaxSecurity2017.com/consumer-notice

Image and Document Scanning Resolution Selection 300dpi

When scanning most documents, 300dpi is an average setting that would work adequately for most work. Note that dpi stands for dots per inch. Here are some other considerations and factors that might require a different scanning resolution.

  • Big Fonts. If you’re scanning a document that uses large fonts, then you can scan at a lower resolution such as 200 or 150.
  • Fine Text. If you’re scanning a document that has very small fonts, such as a legal contract or terms and conditions, you may want to use 600 dpi to ensure the text can be easily enlarged and also for better optical character recognition (OCR).
  • Quality. Consider the ultimate use for the scanned image. If you’re planning to reprint something later, you may want a higher resolution. If you are scanning a document that’s going to be made into a PDF for public viewing, you’ll want to use 300dpi or higher for the best visual quality. Keep in mind that it’s always best to use an original digital file rather than a scanned image of a printed document.
  • Quantity. If you have a lot of pages and materials to scan,  and quality isn’t an issue, then using a lower dpi will speed up the process.
  • Slides. If you are scanning photography slides, you will want a much higher resolution. This is because the slide itself is quite small, but you’ll likely want to be viewing it on a computer display or printing it to a larger format. In order to have a quality resolution image later, you’ll want to scan at a higher resolution such as 1,200 dpi or even 3,000 dpi. For slide or negative scanning, you would need a special photography scanner with a backlighting capability.
  • Small Images. Smaller photos of about 2 inches by 2 inches should be scanned at higher resolutions so they can be enlarged without loss of quality.
  • Speed. Using a lower dpi setting will typically speed up the scanning process. If you have a huge document that you want to get scanned, try using the lowest resolution setting that produces the results you need. Do this by running a test scan.

Scanner Model Types

  • Double-Sided. Some scanners with page feeders can flip a page over and scan the back, while other models can scan both sides of the page at one time which is much faster.
  • Flatbed. When scanning a book or odd shaped documents, it helps to have a flatbed scanner.
  • Legal. When buying multi-purpose printers, you’ll notice that some have a letter-sized flatbed scanning capability. Others will be slightly larger in size to accommodate a legal-size (8.5″ x 14″) flatbed scanning capability. This is very helpful if scanning large receipts.
  • Receipt. Some scanners are designed for receipts. They are usually smaller and have a feeding mechanism. Rather than scanning a large flatbed area, these pull the receipt through and scan only the image area needed which could possibly save time when scanning small pieces of paper.

Color or Black and White

Use color scanning only when necessary. Scanning in grayscale or black and white should be faster and will result in smaller file sizes. If you have black text on a colored background, for example, you may find that black and white or grayscale works better. With receipts and other documents that are hard to read, experiment to find which scanning mode works best.

Page Size Setting

If you’re scanning standard size 8.5″ by 11″ pages on a flatbed scanner, you can set the page size accordingly. If you’re scanning smaller pieces of paper, then scanning at 8.5″ x 11″ will scan more of the scanner bed than necessary. This takes more time. Experiment with using the A5 and A6 sizes. This should speed up scanning because the unit won’t need to move across the full scanner bed.

Apple Mac: Legacy Java SE 6 Runtime and Java Command-Line Tool JDK Alert Messages

Update 30 August 2017

After three years working with various scenarios, a pattern of success is emerging. Today, on a computer running OS X 10.11 El Capitan, the above error message was appearing when trying to run SPSS. After installing Java SE 6 Runtime, SPSS ran without a problem. So, that simple installation seemed to resolve the problem and may work to resolve the issue for other software and other versions of OS X. You can get the Java SE 6 Runtime installation file here.

In 2009, we reported on a problem with Java on Apple Mac computers. Similar Java problems continued over the years, and we reported again in 2012, 2014, and 2015. The problem we reported and posted about back in 2014, that continued to 2015, still exists in macOS Sierra in 2016. There doesn’t seem to be a simple removal tool or utility to fix the problem. Since the problem hasn’t changed much from our previous articles, we’ll offer an update here of what we’ve learned.

You may get an error similar to the ones shown below. This indicates that you have an older software program on your computer that is trying to run on a version of Java that Apple has since removed for security reasons.

These messages look similar, but notice the first one refers to a specific application and the second one generally refers to the java command-line tool. In either case, there is software trying to launch at startup and at other times which is requiring Java.

What You Need to Do

By removing the old software you can get rid of these messages. Software like Clean My Mac can help in removing programs along with the many system and configuration files that are not removed by dragging the application icon to the trash.

Or, you can try to manually find left over application files if you’ve already removed the older software. For example, if you right click on the Finder icon (usually found in the lower left corner on a Mac) you can use the Go to Folder option to go to ~/Library/LaunchAgents and look for files that may have been used by the older software, but be careful because you could also negatively impact currently installed software.

In the case of Adobe Creative Suite 4 (CS4) and Creative Suite 5 (CS5) you should consider upgrading to the latest Adobe Creative Cloud products and plans. An installation of the latest software would presumably remove the older software. If not, use the Clean My Mac utility software mentioned above to remove the old Adobe configuration files.

If you’re committed to running the older software on your computer, you could try (at your own risk) some of the options below to install legacy versions of Java.

Oracle is essentially saying it’s not their fault you have older software installed on your computer and that you need to contact Apple for support. Apple is stating that they are not able to support Java and programs that depend on it so they are sending people to Oracle for support.

Oracle Suggests Contacting Apple

According to Oracle, the developers of Java, the error message is due to an older software program installed on your Apple computer. Their website states:

This is most commonly because an application requires the legacy Java 6 provided by Apple. For the solution to this issue, see http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572.

So, Oracle is sending people to Apple

Apple Suggests Contacting Oracle

If you follow the link to Apple’s website you’ll see the following notice.

Java for OS X 2015-001 installs the legacy Java 6 runtime for OS X 10.11 El Capitan, OS X 10.10 Yosemite, OS X 10.9 Mavericks, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and OS X 10.7 Lion.

This package is exclusively intended for support of legacy software and installs the same deprecated version of Java 6 included in the 2014-001 and 2013-005 releases.

Quit any Java applications before installing this update.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6133  for more details about this update.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 for information about the security content of this update.

Keep your software up to date. If you need Java, download the latest version of Java for OS X directly from Oracle https://www.java.com

NOTE: Older versions may be found at:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1829

If you follow that last link to the older versions, you’ll arrive at a page with this information.

Java for OS X 2014-001 includes installation improvements, and supersedes all previous versions of Java for OS X. This package installs the same version of Java 6 included in Java for OS X 2013-005.

Please quit any Java applications before installing this update.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6133  for more details about this update.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222 for information about the security content of this update.

Keep your software up to date. If you need Java, download the latest version of Java for OS X directly from Oracle https://www.java.com

So, essentially, that last suggestion is that ultimately you should “If you need Java, download the latest version of Java for OS X directly from Oracle.”

If you follow those last two knowledge base articles above, the first link takes you to a page that states:

This article is about older, unsupported Java software. Download the latest version of Java for OS X directly from Oracle.

The second link takes you to a generic Apple page on security, which when searched does not contain the word Java on the entire page.

DreamHost IMAP Email Client Server Settings

Problematic BitDefender AntiVirus is Still PCMagazine Editor’s Choice Despite Numerous Consumer Complaints

Months ago, we reported on a long list of problems with BitDefender. At one point, they had an F-rating with the Better Business Bureau due to so many customer complaints and bad reviews. Their rating is now up to a C, which still isn’t very good. One of the primary customer complaints is that there seems to be no easy method to cancel the subscription renewal. So, customers are getting charged when they don’t want to.

There is no information within the user account login about cancelling the automatic renewal. The BitDefender support search produces no results on a search about cancelling the automatic renewal.

If you do a Google search for bit defender cancel automatic renewal, you’ll find a customer service page with the title “I do not want the Automatic Renewal.” That page has a link you can click on to cancel the service. However, the page it send you to has a login dialog box that doesn’t work, so you’ll never be able to login and cancel. Very bad.

Amazingly, PCMagazine still rates BitDefender as their Editor’s Choice. Anymore, it’s hard to know who to trust online. It seems like many previously reputable companies and online resources are now paid off by unscrupulous companies, and as a result customers get deceived and ripped off.

Enable Speech on iPad or iPhone to Hear Text

When you turn on the Siri text to speech feature, it’s possible to listen to web pages, emails, text messages, and other text. This is a huge time saver and lets you go about your work with hands and eyes free as you listen.

To enable speech on an Apple iPhone, iPad, or iPod, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap on Accessibility
  3. Tap on Speech
  4. Turn on Speak Selection by moving the slide button to the right until it has a green indicator.
  5. Tap on Voices
  6. Tap on English (or your language of choice)
  7. Select a voice to use. The enhanced voices will sound much more natural and may be easier to understand. These require a download.
  8. Once you’re done with the above steps, you can select text in any app on the device, and once the text is selected you’ll see an option to Speak. However, don’t exit the Voices selection yet.
  9. You will want to try out a few of the enhanced voices to see which you prefer. To do so, press the Home key twice to switch to another app. Or, press it once to go to the home screen and start an app such as email or Safari to browse the web. Now you can press home twice to toggle between the two screens — the app you want to read from and the Voices selection screen.
  10. Change to a voice and then switch back to the app to select text and choose Speak. Each time you’ll hear the voice you’ve just selected in settings.
  11. You will also want to adjust the speed of speech to see what speed is best for you. This is found under General > Accessibility > Speech. The Speaking Rate is illustrated by a turtle or a rabbit. When you adjust the speed, the default voice will read a sample. To hear how your selected voice (from step #9) sounds with the speed setting, you can go to a document as described in step #9 above.
